The most common roof in Florida, done properly
Architectural asphalt shingles are on more Florida homes than any other material, and for good reason. They go on quickly, they come in colors and profiles that suit almost any house, and installed correctly they handle the coast’s heat and weather well. The trouble is that “installed correctly” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. A shingle roof is the easiest roof to install badly, because every mistake is hidden under the next course.
Our crew has installed shingle roofs together for more than 30 years. We know what the shortcuts look like, and we don’t take them.
What manufacturer certification means for you
We’re manufacturer-certified Atlas installers. That isn’t a sticker on the truck. It means we’ve been trained on Atlas systems and install them to the manufacturer’s specifications: the right starter, underlayment, nailing pattern, ridge, and accessories, as a matched system rather than a mix of whatever the supply house had on the shelf.
Two things follow for you. First, the roof performs the way the manufacturer designed it to. Second, the full manufacturer warranty passes through to you, which it generally does not when the system is mixed or the crew isn’t certified. On top of that, we guarantee to beat any competitor’s warranty.
Shingles on the coast
Two things matter more in Palm Coast than they do inland.
Algae resistance. The black streaks on roofs around Flagler County are algae feeding on the shingle in our warm, humid air. Modern Atlas architectural shingles are built with algae resistance in them, and we recommend it on every coastal home. It keeps a roof looking new far longer here.
Wind performance. Shingles fail in wind at the edges first (the eave, the rake, the ridge) and then peel back from there. A shingle made for high wind, with sealed starter courses at the perimeter and the right nailing, stays put. The nail pattern is the single biggest factor in how a shingle roof holds, and it’s the one you can’t see once the roof is finished.
What a quality shingle install includes
- Deck inspection and repair. We strip to the wood and replace anything soft before covering it.
- Underlayment over the whole deck, with self-adhered membrane in the valleys and around penetrations where water concentrates.
- Drip edge at eaves and rakes, lapped correctly with the underlayment so water goes into the gutter, not behind the fascia.
- Starter strip along every eave and rake, with the sealant at the edge where wind lifts first.
- Proper nailing. The right number of nails per shingle, in the nail zone, driven flush, not angled, not overdriven, not high.
- Flashing at walls, chimneys, skylights, and pipes, replaced rather than reused.
- Ridge and hip caps and ventilation sized to the attic, so heat and moisture have a way out.
Two shingle roofs that show the range
The 4,500 square foot shingle roof we installed on a secluded property in the heart of Palm Coast used Atlas shingles, chosen for the wind, heat, and algae resistance this climate demands. A big, two-story coastal home with a lot of roof planes and the details to match.
The 11,800 square foot roof on acres out in the country was a different problem: a 16:12 pitch, which is steeper than many homeowners would guess a roof could be. At that slope, every bundle, every tool, and every person is tied off, and the staging has to be planned before the first shingle comes off. Size and pitch like that are where crew experience shows.
Repair or replace?
Not every shingle problem is a new roof. A lifted section after a storm, a failed pipe boot, or a bad flashing joint is a roof repair, and we’ll tell you so. Widespread granule loss, curling, multiple leaks, or a roof that’s simply reached the end of its service life means a roof replacement is the better use of your money. A free roof inspection sorts out which, with photos of what we found.
